Freedom of Information (FOI) legislation can provide unions with an important additional tool for obtaining information held by their institution and other public bodies. Used strategically, FOI requests can help union members understand workplace decisions, support grievance work, support bargaining objectives, identify systemic issues and promote transparency and accountability.
This practical one-day workshop introduces participants to the legal framework and practical use of FOI requests, with a particular focus on the needs of people working in a union environment.
Participants will learn how to identify when an FOI request may be useful, determine which public body is likely to hold the information, frame requests that are clear and specific, anticipate exemptions and other limitations, and use FOI as part of a broader information- gathering strategy.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Union representatives, stewards, bargaining committee members, workplace activists, officers and staff who may use Freedom of Information legislation in support of union work.
This workshop is particularly useful for unions representing workers in the public sector, as well as those whose work frequently intersects with public-sector institutions.
